You may need certificates or other documents issued by the Hungarian authorities while you are studying, working or doing business abroad.

In the vast majority of cases, these documents are used in front of some foreign authority or other body in order to certify a so called legal fact. (e.g. marital status, qualifications etc.).

A number of authorities or other bodies (e.g. university) of foreign countries only accept documents issued by the Hungarian authorities if the documents are legalized for international use.

This legalization for international use means that the official seal and signature on the document is verified by the competent authority or body in Hungary, and the document is certified by one or more additional official stamps.  It is important to point out that legalization confirms the authenticity of the stamp and signature of the official person signing the document, not the content of the document.

The legalization of a document may take place under the so-called apostille legalization or under a so-called embassy attestation, depending on the country in which the document to be used.

Documents issued in Hungary must be legalized in some cases before they are used abroad.

If we want to use a Hungarian document in a foreign country that has signed the so-called Apostille Convention (international convention) then the international legalization of the document takes place with the so-called Apostille. Legalization with an Apostille means that the official seal and signature on the document is verified by the competent Hungarian body, and the document will be given a further stamp to prove this. This additional stamp is the Apostille certificate.

The competent Hungarian authorities can issue the Apostille certificate.

If we wish to use a Hungarian document in a foreign country that has NOT signed the so-called Apostille Convention (international convention) then the international legalization of the document takes place via embassy attestation.

In the course of embassy attestation, after the pre-authentication of several Hungarian authorities, the consulate of the country of use stamps and signs the document.

Embassy attestation is essentially a further stamp and signature to be put on the document which serves to confirm the authenticity of the latest official stamp and signature on the document.

If the country of use has signed the Apostille Convention, then Apostille legalization is required, but if not, then an embassy attestation.
